Floris J. Brown was born on April 22, 1920 in Nansemond
County, VA to the late Edward and Mary Eliza Jordan.
She was the tenth of twelve children. She has resided
in the Chuckatuck community for over 80 years. She was
educated in the Nansemond County Public Schools.
She has been a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church
since 1941 where she has served in the following capacities:
· Senior Choir for over 50 years
· Christianity Choir
· Sunday School teacher
· President of the Missionary Society, current
member of the New Beginnings Missionaries
· Leader of the Youth Department
· Nurses’ Unit
· Trustee Wives Auxiliary, and
· Member of the Oakland Civic League
She has been the organist for various churches
including Olive Branch, Macedonia A.M.E., Holly
Grove A.M.E., and Jones Grove. In 1998, she was
honored by the Little Bethel Reunion Choir for dedicated
service to the Youth Department.
Mama-Grandma-Aunt Floris-Miss Floris-Mrs. Brown was
married to the late Trustee Horace Brown for 58 years
and four months. Through this union they had four beautiful
children, two of which preceded her in death, Dr. Thomas
James Brown, Sr., and Lafayette Brown. Her surviving
children are Glenn Brown and Gloristine Brown-Tatum.
She has seven grandchildren: Pam, T.J., Tameika, Christy,
Tammy, L.B., and Genae; and six great-grandchildren:
T’era, M.J., Imani, Ivan, Micaiah and Trey. She
loves giving them advice and encouragement. She has
one sister, Delma; one sister-in-law, Edna; three daughters-in-law:
Annette, Brenda, and Stella; two sons-in-law: Tate and
Harvey; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She enjoys playing the piano, singing solos when asked
to lead, talking to young people giving them words of
encouragement, and attending the weekly noon-day prayer
service. She also enjoys attending the Suffolk Senior
Citizens activities.
Her favorite scripture is Psalms 121:1, “I will
lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh
my help.” Her motto is to be a FAITHFUL and DEVOTED
CHRISTIAN to the Lord with all her heart.

and total commitment to God, her church, family, and
community. We salute you as a mother and friend, and
